Florida can be hot any season of the year, but there’s something different about the summer months. People will often compare it to being in a wet sauna on the surface of the sun. I hear people from other places say all the time that they’re from hot climates, they’re used to it. Most have no idea what they’re talking about. I’ve lived here for 16 years and I’m still not used to it! Also, remember that a good part of a day at Walt Disney World is spent standing outside. Most people don’t do that at home in the summer.
There are two differences between Florida and other hot areas when it comes to summer. First is Florida’s geographic location. Being so far south means that you’ll be closer to the sun, and the sun knows that. It will blaze on you like it has something to prove! The second difference is the humidity. Florida is surrounded by water, so there’s always moisture in the air. The afternoon storms may cool things off for a little while, but after they pass, the air is sometimes so thick that you’ll feel like you’re breathing through a wet sponge.
So how should you deal with the heat, especially if you’re in the “over 50” part of the Disney Over 50 crowd? First, you need to drink plenty of water. Soda and alcohol may be refreshing for a moment, but they aren’t what your body needs. Water is best.
Also, take breaks in the air conditioning, especially in the middle of the day. Enjoy a full service meal for lunch. Ride something with an indoor queue, even if the Wait Time is longer than you’d like. Watch a show. Even if the show isn’t indoors, you can sit in the shade instead of standing in the sun. Avoid rides where the entire queue is outdoors. Cooling towels and personal fans are also a good idea. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
The most important thing that you can do, though, is to listen to your body. Know your limits. If you feel shaky, lightheaded, nauseous, or just like something is off, sit down immediately. It doesn’t matter if you’re next in line, your health is more important. If someone in your group complains of feeling ill, don’t prop them up or tell them that they’ll be fine. Take it seriously! I’ve always had problems with heat, but they’ve gotten worse as I’ve grown older. We can’t do today what we did when we were 20! And don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Cast Members know what to do.
And don’t forget, Dole Whip is even more refreshing when the temperature soars. Just saying…
