Primeval Whirl Is NOT Permanently Closed

Primeval Whirl is located in DinoLand U.S.A.

A couple of months ago I mentioned that something strange was going on with Primeval Whirl at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The ride had closed in June, and just didn’t reopen. Many people speculated that the trip back in time was closed for good. It turns out that is not the case.

According to the Walt Disney World website, Primeval Whirl is indeed going to reopen. It is scheduled to start twirling people once again on Saturday, November 23. There is a bit of a catch. The operating hours are listed only through November 30. That’s Thanksgiving Week, which is one of the busiest weeks of the year.

Something interesting about Primeval Whirl is that there are no times listed in December, including Christmas Day, which is one of the busiest days of the year. But on January 1, 2020, the ride has times listed again. There are then times listed daily into May, as far as I can check on the calendar. So it looks like Primeval Whirl is not going seasonal.

Then again, when Primeval Whirl closed in June, it was sudden. Just because it is currently on the calendar does not mean that it will stay on the calendar. Disney has taken attractions off of the calendar before, it could happen again.

Primeval Whirl is listed as a FastPass+ selection for Thanksgiving Week in November, although there aren’t currently any available for those eight days. It’s the “There are no more FastPass+ times for this experience, but standby may be available” message. Starting on December 1 the ride is still listed, but it says “FastPass+ Service Unavailable”. I can’t tell you what is listed starting on January 1, because I’m an Annual Passholder and I can only make reservations 30 days out.

On a surface level, it looks like Primeval Whirl is about to open again. I’m optimistic. That said, things can and do change, so if I hear anything else I’ll let you know.
