What’s Going on With Primeval Whirl?

For most Walt Disney World guests, Primeval Whirl is not on the top of their must-do lists. Many people do not even know that the ride exists. For those who don’t, it’s a roller coaster in DinoLand U.S.A. at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It’s not high on the thrill scale, but it is fun if you like twirling in circles.

Primeval Whirl suddenly closed back in June for maintenance. From what I’ve heard, the closure was not scheduled ahead of time. There was a rumor that it would open again in July, but that did not happen. It is still closed now, months later. FastPass+ is not available, and it is listed as “temporarily closed” on the My Disney Experience App.

I have heard two rumors about what is going on. The first rumor is that Disney has decided to retheme the ride. (When it was open it acted as a time machine.) While this could be true, the rumor does not really make a lot of sense to me. A good part of DinoLand U.S.A. is prehistoric carnival themed, and Primeval Whirl fits right in with that. Unless they plan to change the theme for the entire area, I doubt that is what is going on.

The second rumor is that the ride is going to go seasonal. That means that it would run only during the busiest times of the year. This certainly makes more sense to me, especially since there was seldom a long wait for the ride. Turning it seasonal could draw more people to it when it is open.

Back when the ride was open…

Then again, sometimes going seasonal is the kiss of death. Stitch’s Great Escape is officially a seasonal attraction at the Magic Kingdom, but when was the last time that you saw it open? It’s been a long time.

So far I have not heard anything official about Primeval Whirl, except that it is “temporarily closed”. If I hear anything else, I will share it here.
