Is Walt Disney World Going Cashless?

There’s a rumor going around that Walt Disney World is going cashless. Remember that right now it’s a rumor, so don’t believe anything until there is an official announcement from Disney.

Here’s where the rumor stems from. There are some kiosks at Walt Disney World that no longer accept cash. All I’ve seen so far are movable kiosks and popcorn stands. These are clearly marked with a sign that states that the location no longer accepts cash. If you don’t see the sign, cash is fine.

Because there are a few places that are now cashless, people are jumping to conclusions. Some have asked Cast Members, who have said that yes, Walt Disney World is going cashless. The problem with that is that Cast Members don’t know for sure, they’re making assumptions. I have Cast Member friends who have told me that they’re often the last to know when there is going to be a change. As I stated before, unless there has been an official announcement, take anything said by a Cast Member with a grain of salt.

Could Walt Disney World go cashless? It’s possible. Cash is accepted at fewer places around the country all the time, Disney might decide to follow suit. What makes me think that they won’t, though, is that Disney has system problems from time to time. More than once in the past couple of years the system went down and cash was all that could be processed.

What happens if Walt Disney World does go cashless? It’s pretty simple. Most likely, there will be machines throughout the park where you can convert cash to a gift card. The SeaWorld Parks are all cashless, and it’s quick and easy to convert.

I have one final thought on whether or not Walt Disney World will go totally cashless. Disney is a business, and they want your money. If cash is no longer accepted, there will be purchases that are missed out on because someone didn’t want to go through the hassle of buying a gift card. While it semi evens out if someone buys a $50 card and only uses $45 of it, in the long run I think they’d miss out on more from people not buying things. I do think it’s possible for more locations to stop accepting cash. If I hear anything, I’ll let you know.
