Yesterday (December 10) the 2020 Disney Investor Day meeting was held. There were too many announcements in the three and a half hour meeting to name them all. D23 has done a great wrap-up, you can read that here. If you want to watch the replay, you will find it here. Instead of trying to recap everything, I thought that I’d add some of the highlights.
There are several new live action series in development for Disney+. They include Beauty and the Beast (that’s a working title), Swiss Family Robinson, an adaptation of the bestselling book Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Turner & Hooch, Big Shot, and The Mysterious Benedict Society. If you’re a fan of animation, the new Disney+ series will include Zootopia+, Moana, Tiana, and Baymax. There will be a long form Pixar series called Win or Lose as well.
Several live action movies for Disney+ were also announced. They include Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers, Pinocchio, Peter Pan & Wendy, and Disenchanted, which is a sequel to the popular Enchanted. Amy Adams will reprise her role.
There were plenty of announcements for Lucasfilm. New live action series will include Asoka and Rangers of the New Republic, which are both set in the same timeline as The Mandalorian. We already knew that Ewan McGregor will reprise his role for Obi-Wan, it was announced that Hayden Christiansen will join the cast as Darth Vader. Star Wars is getting even more series: Andor, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Star Wars: Visions, Lando, The Acolyte, and A Droid Story. The next theatrical release will be Rogue Squadron.
Outside of the Star Wars universe, Lucasfilm is developing the series Willow, in which Warwick Davis will reprise the role. A fifth theatrical Indiana Jones movie is in the works, with Harrison Ford again playing the heroic archaeologist. Children of Blood & Bone will also be a theatrical release from Lucasfilm.
There was plenty of news for Marvel fans as well. Three new series were announced for Disney+, Secret Invasion, Ironheart, and Armor Wars. There were also sneak peeks of WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki, all of which are coming to Disney+ in 2021. If you want to see the clips, they’re available on the D23 wrap-up. There was also information on the animated series What If…?, as well as Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Also announced was I Am Groot, which will be a series of original shorts. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Fantastic Four were announced as new theatrical releases. It was also stated that the late Chadwick Boseman will not be replaced for Black Panther 2.
There’s one final announcement that I’d like to share. Raya and the Last Dragon will be released in March. It will be both in theaters, and also on Disney+ under Premier Access. The cost on Disney+ will be $29.99.
These are some of the major announcements from the meeting. There was also information on Hulu, ESPN+, and National Geographic. I know that I’ve missed things, and honestly, I might not have gotten every detail right. I watched a good part of the presentation live, and the information was being thrown out a mile a minute. The main thing that I got out of the announcements is that my Disney+ subscription is worth every penny, even though the cost is going up to $7.99 a month in March. This is an exciting time to be a Disney/Lucasfilm/Marvel fan.
