Disneyland Resort hosted more than 100 Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen for a full day at The Happiest Place on Earth, marking both Los Angeles Fleet Week and the 250th anniversaries of the United States Navy and Marine Corps — part of the nationwide “Disney Celebrates America” events leading up to the country’s 250th anniversary.
Building on more than 100 years of Disney’s support for the U.S. Armed Forces, Disneyland created an unforgettable day for the visiting service members, blending military tradition with Disney magic.
Held annually ahead of Memorial Day weekend, LA Fleet Week is a cherished tradition that salutes the men and women of the U.S. Sea Services.
Special Disneyland Flag Retreat Honors the Sea Services
The highlight of the day was park guests on Main Street, U.S.A., applauding Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen as they marched down the street followed by one of the largest U.S. Navy band ever to perform at Disneyland for a moving flag retreat ceremony in Town Square honoring both services’ 250 years of service.
The special ceremony in Town Square at Disneyland park featured a patriotic performance by the Navy Band Southwest . It was capped off with a thunderous flyover by the U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornets from the “Mighty Shrikes” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 94 from Naval Air Station Lemoore creating a rare and powerful visual salute to service in the heart of the park.
Flag ceremonies have been a fundamental part of Disney Parks since the opening of Disneyland park more than 70 years ago, and in Magic Kingdom Park since 1971. This tradition began with our founders, Walt and Roy O. Disney, who both served their country during World War I. Disney has continuously honored service members, veterans, and their families in many ways throughout the history of the company.
A Sail-abration Unlike Any Other
Throughout their magical day, Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen enjoyed classic attractions celebrating America including Jungle Cruise and the Mark Twain Riverboat. For the grand finale, they experienced the dazzling “Paint the Night” parade followed by the “Wondrous Journeys” nighttime spectacular.
The service members also had the chance to meet Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle as they made a special appearance in their brand new patriotic attire, with the designs making their debut as part of the celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary.
With vibrant colors and iconic details, the new ensembles are a perfect nod to America’s enduring story as Disney invites families everywhere to reflect on where we’ve been, celebrate who we are, and imagine the extraordinary future we can create together.
During a special moment, Josh D’Amaro, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company presented U.S. military leaders with an American flag flown over the park, symbolizing gratitude for all Sailors and Marines who have protected the nation for the past two and a half centuries.
“I am very grateful to Disney for the opportunity to recognize our incredible Sailors and Marines,” said U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Robert Nowakowski. “At the heart of America’s story is the sea – and the American Sailor who has been safeguarding our independence for 250 years. Today has truly highlighted Disney’s continued efforts to pay tribute to the service members who came before us and the generations yet to come. It was an honor to be here.”
