The 2022 Hurricane Season Is Here

Storms can be pretty, but need to be taken seriously

June 1 marks the beginning of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, and it will run through November 30. Those dates don’t mean that there can’t be a hurricane or tropical storm at another time, it’s just unlikely.

Hurricane Season does not mean that you shouldn’t plan a trip to Walt Disney World for the next few months. Millions of people travel here each year without being affected by a major storm. That said, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the weather, no matter when you plan to travel.

If there is a storm that will affect your plans, Disney will work with you. Most airlines will as well. It’s never a bad idea to purchase travel insurance, just in case. Read the policy to ensure that a major storm will be covered.

Taken after Hurricane Irma in 2017

Most years, the early hurricanes and tropical storms do not affect Central Florida. This isn’t always the case, but there is no reason to panic if you hear of a storm forming in the Atlantic. Storms late in the season also rarely are a problem. The heart of the Hurricane Season is August, September, and October. September 10 is considered the peek day. It was September 10 that Hurricane Irma hit the Orlando area (and my roof) in 2017. That was the last major storm to hit the area, although there have been other storms with minor impacts.

Since I’m local and constantly watch the news, I’ll keep you updated if there is a storm that could hurt your vacation. Otherwise, don’t panic. Just because a storm is forming does not mean that the area will shut down. That said, “go anyway because a rainy day at Disney is better than a sunny day anywhere else” is terrible advice if a tropical system is approaching. If there is a major storm on the way, the best thing to do is to reschedule your vacation. Hurricanes need to be taken seriously.
