Sunday Savings Series: Disney Without the Dining Plan

Fish are flying once again…

With even more restaurants open people are starting to ask once again when the Disney Dining Plan will return. We do know that it’s coming back, but Disney hasn’t even given a hint on when that will happen.

Since I like to talk about saving money on Sundays, I thought this might be a good time to mention the DDP once again. The Disney Dining Plan is designed as a convenience, it is NOT meant to save you money.

The only way that the Disney Dining Plan offers a “deal” is if you like to reserve character meals. Even then, you have to buy one of the more expensive plans. If you’re on a budget, chances are that character meals aren’t on your agenda.

The best way to save money on dining while at Walt Disney World is to read the menus ahead of time, before you leave home. Most of them have the prices included. If the prices aren’t listed and you’re on a budget, you can’t afford it.

It’s also not a bad idea to stagger your meals. I like to have a late breakfast and early dinner. That’s the perfect way to save money each day by buying one less meal. I might also throw in a snack, something not too expensive like Dole Whip or a Mickey Pretzel.

With the Disney Dining Plan, you pay for extras. It includes a beverage and sometimes an appetizer or dessert. Drink water, or bring in your own beverage. If you really want that dessert, split it.

If you don’t have access to a car you can order groceries and have them delivered to your hotel. If you’re an Amazon Prime member you might want to take advantage of your subscription. I recommend Instacart because they have incredible customer service. Some transportation options from Orlando International Airport include a stop at a local store so you can pick up bagels, fruit, and a case of soda.

The Disney Dining Plan is nice if you’re trying to budget, and I do hope it comes back soon. Remember, though, that Disney comes out on top with this one. If you want to save money, the Disney Dining Plan isn’t the way to do it.
