Back in March (wow, that feels like so long ago!) I told you that the opening date had been announced for Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure. The date given was July 18. Well, it looks like that is not going to happen. Disneyland has changed the website back to “coming soon”.
The automatic assumption here is that the date has been pushed back because Disneyland will not be open again by July 18. That is not necessarily the case. When the parks on both coasts (and across the world) reopen, there is going to need to be some sort of crowd control. A brand new land is going to bring a lot of people, especially a land based on something as popular as the Avengers franchise. The date might have been pushed back to keep the crowd levels down.
Another reason why the date might have been pushed back is because construction has stopped during the closures. This is for the safety of the workers. It could be that Disney has realized that the July 18 date is out of reach because they want everything to be perfect, and it won’t be ready in time.
Of course, there is the chance that the parks won’t be open by July 18. No one really has any idea right now. I do hope that things are open again by July. The past couple of days there have been some small glimmers of hope as far as flattening the curve. Social distancing seems to be working!
I would not be surprised if the Avengers Campus opening gets moved back a year. Next summer the bi-annual D23 Expo should be held in Anaheim, and it makes sense for them to open the new land a few weeks earlier. That is what they did with Galaxy’s Edge last year, and it worked very well. As soon as I hear a new date or more information, I will let you know. I have a feeling that it will be a while.
