Our First Stay at The Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

Welcome home!

In 2024, my family and I bought an RV and went on the adventure of a lifetime. It was something that we always said that we would do “someday”, and we decided to finally make someday happen. After our first journey, we realized that we loved the RV life, and we’ve traveled a fair amount. We’ve explored different parts of Florida on short trips, as well as taken a few longer drives. It’s been amazing.

I’ve done a lot of research on different RV campgrounds in Florida, and one name kept coming up over and over; The Campgrounds at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort.

Tri-Circle-D Ranch is free to visit

I’ve been to Fort Wilderness a fair amount. I’ve visited Tri-Circle-D Ranch several times. I’ve toured the new cabins. I’ve eaten at Trails End. When we decided that we wanted to take a two night camping staycation, we chose Disney’s Fort Wilderness.

Playground

Austin was the first Cast Member we saw when we checked in, and he was incredible. He was one of those Cast Members who you know Walt Disney would have been proud of. He answered our questions and gave us a lot of helpful information. He also gave us easy directions to our site.

Picnic table at our campsite

The sites at Fort Wilderness are back in, and they’re at a weird angle. It wasn’t the easiest site that we’ve pulled into, but we’ve also seen much worse. Once we were settled and plugged in, all was great! The site wasn’t huge, but it was a decent size. It was level, which makes a big difference. We had a grill and a picnic table. There are no firepits at any of the campsites, and there are some pretty strict regulations if you want to bring your own.

Chip ‘n’ Dale remind people to watch for traffic!

We made one major mistake at Disney’s Fort Wilderness, one that we won’t repeat when we return. We didn’t rent a golf cart. My daughter and I are fitness walkers, so we didn’t really think that we’d need one. There’s also bus transportation around the resort. The buses work well, but we had our dog, Yoda. Dogs aren’t allowed on the buses.

Yoda loves to camp!

Walking might have been okay if the weather hadn’t turned on us. Although the chances of rain were low both evenings, I don’t think there’s ever a zero chance in September in Florida! Because of the rain, we ended up missing the Electrical Water Pageant both evenings. It still took place, we just didn’t want to get soaked to see it.

Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long, in the rain

One thing we did decide to see in the rain was Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long. I’ve been told that it will take place in the rain, but will be canceled if there is lightning. This is a free activity, and dogs are allowed. You can purchase a S’mores kit if you’d like and roast your marshmallow over the campfire. A cowboy leads the crowd in song, and Chip ‘n’ Dale are there for part of it. The experience was fun, and I’d love to go back sometime when it isn’t raining.

Different activities take place at Disney’s Fort Wilderness throughout the day. There are arts and crafts, greetings with Chip ‘n’ Dale, pickleball, pools, playgrounds, horseback riding, and more. Some cost extra. Tri-Circle-D Ranch is must-visit. Dogs aren’t allowed near the horses, so we took turns with Yoda.

One of the other campsites

It was also fun to see what other campers came up with. Many sites were decorated for Halloween. I’ve heard that it’s festive around the holidays as well.

One of several deer

We also spotted some wildlife during our stay at Disney’s Fort Wilderness. There were several deer hanging out near Waggin’ Trails Dog Park. A wild turkey wandered right through a campsite near ours. We didn’t see any bears, but the trash cans are all bearproof, so they must be around somewhere!

Waggin’ Trails Dog Park

Overall, I can see why so many people recommend The Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. Our trip was short, and we didn’t get to do everything that we wanted to do because of the weather, but that was okay. Like so many others, we’ll be back!
