When I eat at a full service restaurant, often my daughter and I will split an entree. The portions at Walt Disney World are huge, and there is plenty of food for both of us. I also don’t drink alcohol or soda so I usually will order water, and we rarely get dessert. I still won’t skimp on the tip. I will tip as if we had ordered two entrees instead of one, and as if we had ordered some of the extras.
If you look at the bottom of your bill, there will be suggested amounts for the gratuity for both 18 percent and 20 percent. There are also tip calculators that you can find online or download for your phone. Not knowing how much to tip is no excuse these days.
Another reason why I like to be generous right now is because capacity is still limited in the restaurants. That means that the servers are making less money. They are still providing exceptional service, and I think that a good tip will show them how thankful I am for their help.
I’ve had bad service at Walt Disney World, but the good far outweighs the bad. When the service has been less than stellar I’ve written it off in my mind as the server was just having a bad day. There are often circumstances that we don’t know about such as an issue in the kitchen or a personal issue that is weighing close to the heart. I will never stiff a server, I waited tables in college and I know how hard it is.
The way that I look at it is if someone can’t afford to leave a generous tip, they can’t afford to eat in that restaurant. I’m not rich by any means. When we enjoy a full service restaurant, it’s for some type of celebration. Part of celebrating includes leaving a nice tip. Times are tough. A generous tip can make a difference in someone else’s life that we will never know about.
