Today (January 18) is Winnie the Pooh Day! On this date in 1882 A. A. Milne was born. Winnie the Pooh has been around since the 1920’s. He’s the definition of timeless character.
Winnie the Pooh was my first friend. I still have the stuffed Pooh Bear that I was given as a baby. I have had him for so long that I can’t remember not having him. I’m pretty sure that my favorite color is yellow because of that bear.
Some of my earliest memories are sitting in my father’s lap, with him reading the words of A. A. Milne to me. We did this so often that I had it almost memorized. When I got a little bit older he would allow me to help with the words. That’s a good part of how I learned to read.
I’m feeling a bit sentimental today, so learning that it’s Winnie the Pooh Day has put a smile on my face. My parents are now both 94 and I won’t be able to see them again until they’ve been vaccinated. It’s been months, and I miss them more than I can say. We talk all the time, but it’s not the same. While thinking about Pooh Bear on this day I can close my eyes and almost picture myself in my Dad’s lap once again. I can feel the safety and security that we took for granted as a child.
I hope you enjoy your Winnie the Pooh Day. One of my favorite things about Pooh is how simple his life is, and how it’s the little things that really make the biggest impact.
Stay safe, my friends.
