What Is IAAPA?

From the 2025 IAAPA Expo

I write a lot about IAAPA. But what is IAAPA?

IAAPA stands for International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. It is the largest trade organization that covers all things pertaining to the attractions industry. Founded in 1918, it is a global organization.

One of the main focuses of IAAPA is community. Whether it’s a family business renting out bounce houses, or a billion dollar theme park complex, it’s welcome at IAAPA. There’s a focus on teaching, learning, advocacy, and helping everyone to succeed.

IAAPA holds events all year across the planet. The largest is IAAPA Expo, which takes place each November at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. I’ve been lucky enough to be hosted several times, it’s fascinating! IAAPA Expo features big announcements, such as the unveiling of new ride vehicles for popular theme parks. But it’s more than just that. There are seminars, networking opportunities, and items for sale. If someone is involved with the attractions industry, IAAPA Expo is the place to be!

The IAAPA Hall of Fame was established in 1990. Walt Disney was posthumously one of the first inductees. Other names that you might recognize include Roy O. Disney, Tony Baxter, PT Barnum, Dick Knoebel, and Walter Knott.

This barely scratches the surface of all that IAAPA is. Let’s just say, though, that if you’ve ever gone to a theme park, ever gone bowling, ever won a carnival prize, ever watched the grandkids ride a giant tiger at a mall, you’ve experienced IAAPA. It’s the global organization that you may not know much about, but has affected all of our lives.
