Since I live just a few minutes from Walt Disney World, there are some things that I don’t do all that often. One of those is character dining. I have nothing against it and it’s a lot of fun, but it’s hard for me to justify the cost when I can just eat at home and see the characters elsewhere.
Recently, my daughter and I decided to splurge and book Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Harvest Feast at Epcot’s Garden Grill Restaurant. I booked a breakfast Eat to the Beat Dining Package. I’m so glad that we did, we had a great time.
When we checked in I was given the choice of booth or table. I picked booth. There are two levels of seating, the booths are on the lower level and the tables are on the upper. The booths are closer to the outer wall and the scenes. It doesn’t matter which you pick to see the characters.
I’ll start with the restaurant itself. It’s circular and it moves. The movement is slow, but you will most likely feel it, especially at first. Once the food started to come and we weren’t thinking about it we didn’t notice it as much. You’ll go past the top of some scenes from Living with the Land, as well as other backgrounds.
There is as much food as you would like. My daughter and I are both vegetarian and she has a dairy allergy, so we ordered the Chip ‘n’ Dale Plant-based Harvest Feast. We had watermelon, scrambled “eggs”, breakfast “sausage”, home fries, and Mickey Waffles. All of it was plant-based, and we could have as much as we wanted. The food is served family style, it was brought out in a large skillet and we plated it ourselves. All of it was delicious!
The real reason anyone reserves a character meal is for the characters, and they were all wonderful. We met Mickey, Chip, Pluto, and Dale, in that order. Mickey was Farmer Mickey. We had plenty of time with the characters, and we saw them more than once. We were dining when they were changing from breakfast to lunch (and the characters were about to go on break) so a Cast Member came around to each table to make sure that everyone had enjoyed plenty of character time.
Even though we were still there between meals, we never felt rushed. Our server, Kim, was attentive but not overbearing. I had a couple of questions about the restaurant and she was happy to answer them. She also took care of getting our Eat to the Beat vouchers so that we didn’t have to wonder about them.
Character meals are still a luxury for me, but I am happy that we decided to try Garden Grill Restaurant. The food was delicious, the staff was wonderful, and the characters were fantastic. I wouldn’t mind going again, maybe for lunch next time. It’s not fine dining, but it is fun dining.
