There has been a lot of negativity in some Disney communities lately, so I’ve decided to write about something positive. When I started thinking about all the recent changes, the first thing that popped into my mind was Beacons of Magic on Spaceship Earth. Seeing it is something that I will never grow tired of.
I love all four Beacons of Magic, they add a little extra something to each of the Walt Disney World theme parks. But in my mind, the other three parks are not even close to what we see at Epcot.
Each evening, Spaceship Earth comes alive with color. The solid colors alone have the wow factor, but the changing patterns are incredible. I often lose track of time, just watching things change on Spaceship Earth.
Another thing that is nice about Spaceship Earth these days is that they can add new programs. Last year during the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays there was a Christmas sweater sequence. During Festival of the Arts it was Rainbow Connection, including Kermit’s voice. For the Flower & Garden Festival it’s Colors of the Wind. I look forward to learning what is planned for the Food & Wine Festival!
You don’t have to be at Epcot to enjoy Beacons of Magic. It is visible from many places on Walt Disney World property. Spaceship Earth after dark was always easy to see, but now it’s hard to miss!
I wonder sometimes if the four month closure affected the plans for Epcot. Remember, originally Spaceship Earth was going to be closed for two and a half years and undergo a complete refurbishment. The final date it was to be open was in May, 2020, but then those plans were put on hold. It seems unlikely that there would have been something special taking place on Spaceship Earth’s exterior if it was surrounded by construction walls.
The next time you’re at Epcot after dark, take a few minutes to enjoy this gift that we’ve been given. I like to watch in the front of the park, near the fountain. It’s such a beautiful thing to see!
