At the D23 Expo last August it was announced that Spaceship Earth will undergo a major refurbishment and reimagining, although it was rumored long before that. We now know when all of it will begin. According to Disney Parks Blog, “Walt Disney World Imagineering is excited to start implementing our new vision for Spaceship Earth beginning on May 26.”
We have also been given some details of what the reimagined ride will be like. Some of the scenes will remain, but they will receive new elements. We’ve been told that new lighting will be added to the scene in Egypt, for example. There will be new narration for the attraction as well.
It is unknown how long Spaceship Earth will be closed. Rumors state that the reimagining could last up to two and a half years! Nothing official has been said. I, for one, am glad that they will be updating the attraction instead of changing it all together. I look forward to seeing what the Imagineers come up with.
Updating Spaceship Earth is just part of the changes that are taking place at EPCOT. The entire front of the park is changing. The construction walls may be a bit overwhelming right now, but once the work is finished it will be worth it!
