Sunday Savings Series: Affording the Holiday Season

The Magic Kingdom is even more magical during the holidays!

The holidays are my favorite time of year at Walt Disney World. The weather is (usually) nicer, the decorations are up, and there is cheer around every corner. If it’s your dream to visit Walt Disney World during the holidays but you’re worried about the cost, here are a few tips on affording the holiday season.

You will most likely save money if you decide to stay off property. There are many discount hotels that aren’t far from Walt Disney World. Most are basic. Take reviews with a grain of salt, because people are more likely to complain than to praise. You might want to consider an Airbnb, it could be an affordable option. If you go that route, please remember that these homes are in residential neighborhoods. Respect those who live there. Staying off property means that you won’t have free parking at the theme parks, so if you’re driving add that cost to your budget.

Speaking of driving, how you get to Walt Disney World could help you to save. With flights expensive during the holiday season, you could spend significantly less if you drive. The distance will stop many from driving, but for others it could be a possibility that they haven’t considered. I’ve driven from Florida to Massachusetts and back again by myself, if I can do it you and your family can as well! Give yourself enough time, take breaks, and (depending on the distance) plan to stop overnight along the way.

If you have a car it will be much easier to save on food. Pack some shelf stable items before you leave home that you can easily open and eat once you’re in Florida. Drive to a local Publix (they’re everywhere!) once you’re here and purchase anything that you forgot. Outside food is allowed in the theme parks, just no glass bottles or alcohol. Don’t pack anything that will not stand up under the Florida sun. Chocolate is not a good idea, but peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will do just fine. Remember that you’ll be carrying things with you until they’re consumed, so don’t pack anything that is too heavy.

When you visit makes a difference. Thanksgiving and Christmas Week are going to cost more than the week after Thanksgiving. If your dates are flexible, you will be able to save on both accommodations and tickets.

Consider what tickets will make the most sense for you. One park a day tickets will cost less than Park Hopper, so that could be an option. Then again, it might make more sense to buy Park Hopper and spend fewer days in the parks. That way, you’ll be able to see the decorations in all four parks. A little bit of math can help you to decide which tickets will fit your budget.

The holidays are the perfect time to Resort Hop! While it’s hit or miss on whether or not you’ll be allowed to park at a resort, you can park at Disney Springs and use Disney transportation. While at Disney Springs don’t forget to check out the trees and other activities. It’s a great place to visit during the holidays.

If you’re traveling with a young one, buy something special at home and hide it in your luggage. Give it to him or her at some point during the trip, so the child will associate the toy with the holidays at Walt Disney World.

One final money saving tip for the holidays; stay out of the stores. Impulse buying will eat up your budget! Before you look for one special item, consider if you can find something that you will like just as much at home. It isn’t hard to find Disney Christmas t-shirts in your local stores, and you’ll pay half as much. If you want something that is Walt Disney World holiday related, don’t buy it until the last day of your trip. You’ll then know if there’s anything left in your budget for souvenirs.
