Last year at this time I was counting down to the D23 Expo in Anaheim. It ran August 23-25, and it was packed full of information and fun. It was my second time attending the bi-annual convention, and I hope not my last!
I checked, and the 2019 D23 Expo was announced in March, 2018. That’s a long time to make plans. If we were to follow the same timeline, we should already know when it will take place next year. Instead, we wait. I’m sure that Disney knows when they hope to hold the convention, but if they do it is a tightly guarded secret.
We all hope that by this time next year that COVID-19 will be just a bad memory. But we also know that there is a chance that we will still be social distancing and avoiding crowds a year from now. When Star Wars Celebration was canceled for 2020, it meant a lot of money lost in refunds, unused merchandise, etc. (It’s been rescheduled for 2022, not 2021.) If there has been no date announced for the next D23 Expo, it will be easier on everyone if it can’t safely happen.
The D23 Expo website still says “see you in 2021”, so it hasn’t been officially canceled or put on hold. As soon as a feasible date has been announced, I will let you know.
One more piece of convention news, and this time it’s for Orlando. Megacon Orlando was moved twice this year, and then eventually canceled. The date for next year is March 18-21. Here’s hoping that we’re on the other side of this by then.
