On Monday, May 12, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek was interviewed by Julia Boorstin from CNBC. You can watch the interview here. I thought that I’d add a few of the highlights.
We’re all most anxious to learn what will happen with the parks here in the United States. Chapek claims that a reopening date has not been set. I know that a lot of people have been listening to financial experts or looking for signs based on reservations. Stop looking for clues, because no one knows when the parks will reopen. Boorstin pushed him for a date, but Chapek wouldn’t bite.
The second bit of information given by Chapek was that face masks will most likely be required for Cast Members AND guests here in the United States. This is not something that will be open for debate. I know that it’s hot and humid in Florida, and that face masks will be miserable in the summer months. If they’re required, they’re required, it’s as simple as that. Going off topic for a second, at this moment in time I want to see my parents more than anything. If wearing a face mask will somehow allow that to happen sooner, I’ll wear one 24/7. If you’re concerned about getting overheated while wearing a mask, plan your vacation for a cooler time of year. I’m not trying to be rude, but Disney makes the rules, and this is one that they will enforce.
Chapek also talked about the reopening of Shanghai Disneyland. Currently they are limiting the park to less than 30% capacity. They plan to increase by 5,000 guests a week, and then see what happens from there. He said that they’re keeping an eye on Shanghai to come up with a plan for the other parks around the world.
One other item of note was discussed that includes both Shanghai and Walt Disney World. Chapek mentioned that Disneytown at Shanghai Disney has been open for several weeks, and that guests have followed the guidelines. He then mentioned how Disney Springs is starting to reopen on May 20. I took it as an implication that Disney Springs is a bit of a trial run. Guests will need to prove that we can follow the rules at Disney Springs if we want to see the rest of Walt Disney World opening sooner, rather than later.
