Sporks For Sale!

Who would have thought that a metal utensil would cause so many problems?

Disney wanted to make guests at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge truly feel as if they were visiting a galaxy far, far away. That includes at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. When the eatery opened at Disneyland in California, instead of traditional plastic forks and spoons diners were given a weird metal spork. These were to be returned after the meal. Unfortunately, they were easy to slip into a pocket or a bag, and so many sporks were stolen in California that Disney soon switched to plain, boring, plastic utensils.

When Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in August, Docking Bay 7 had sporks! Cast Members were instructed to keep an eye on things, and trays were whisked away the moment someone finished a meal. That still didn’t stop the stealing. It did not take long for Walt Disney World to switch to plastic as well.

Even though the sporks were gone, it was still fairly easy to get one; if you were willing to pay. That’s because many people who stole them decided to profit off of them. There are plenty of sporks for sale on eBay. They are currently selling from between $40 and $250! That is just a quick glance by me, there could be higher and lower prices. Still, many people are trying to make money off of the stolen sporks, and they have been for months.

Disney has come up with a solution that I think is brilliant. You can once again get a spork at Disneyland, but you will have to pay for it. They are being sold for $10.99 each, and they come with a travel bag. I have heard that there is a limit of one per guest, but I’m not 100% sure whether or not that is true.

I love that Disney decided to do something about this. I can’t imagine stealing something, even something as simple as a utensil, no matter how cool it is. I guess that some people might not have realized that they weren’t allowed to take them, but given the number of sporks that have been sold on sites like eBay, I’m sure that most were out and out stolen.

At the moment, sporks are only for sale at Disneyland, but if they sell well I would not be surprised to see them in Florida soon. While I love Star Wars, I am not a fan of the Docking Bay 7 sporks. I’m left handed, and these were definitely designed by a team of righties. They also have a very metallic taste when you eat with them. They look cool, but I think I’ll pass on buying one. I do hope that this puts an end to the high price of the stolen sporks on eBay. It saddens me that people try to take advantage of others that way, and I like that Disney has made a move to take back control.
