Disney Bounding

When is a costume not a costume?

When visiting Walt Disney World, you will see plenty of kids dressed as pirates, princesses, and other characters. Costumes are allowed for children who are 13 and under. There are of course still some restrictions, but no one is going to really mistake a five-year-old Belle as a Walt Disney World employee. Over 13, things are much more strict. Costumes are not allowed, except at some special events. Disney doesn’t want kids to think that someone who doesn’t work for them might be the “real” Belle. It’s a safety issue. That doesn’t mean that you can’t have a little bit of dress up fun when you visit Walt Disney World. There is another great option, one that Disney approves of.

It’s called Disney Bounding. The idea is simple, you can create an outfit that is based on the attributes of a character. A woman who wants to channel her inner Minnie can wear a red and white polka dot dress and Minnie ears that match. With a bowtie, suspenders, and a jacket a man could resemble Carl Fredricksen, but don’t forget the glasses! You can create an outfit that matches a character’s colors, or you can buy an outfit that isn’t quite a costume, but there is no question who it is based on.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has taken Disney Bounding to a whole new level. Many people are creating outfits that are not based on a specific Star Wars character. They will make something that has a Jedi or Sith look to it. Others are looking like citizens of Black Spire Outpost. They will use pieces that are similar to what the Cast Members wear, and create a look like that. Of course you will still see plenty of people dressed to resemble Han Solo, Rey, and other Star Wars characters.

If you aren’t sure where to start if you want to create a Disney Bound outfit, Disney has your back. You can find some great Star Wars themed pieces in the shops when you first enter Disney’s Hollywood Studios, as well as in Galaxy’s Edge. If you’re not wanting to Disney Bound from Star Wars, I’d suggest heading to World of Disney at Disney Springs. You are sure to find some inspiration there. You can also find plenty of ideas online.

Disney has a way to take things one step further. Make an appointment with Character Couture. A Disney artist will create the perfect look to match your Disney Bound idea. Hair and makeup are included, and you can add nails to your package. Character Couture is a great way to add to the outfit that you have decided upon.

If you’re worried that your look is too close to a costume, bring a change of clothes with you, just in case. There are lockers that you can rent in the front of the parks so that you won’t have to carry it all day. You can also ask at your hotel if you’re staying on property. The Cast Members there will be able to tell you if you’ve gone too far, or if it is just right.

Disney Bounding is growing in popularity. It’s a fun way to add a little extra magic into your day. Allow yourself to get into the character a bit while you’re at it. You are “bound” to get compliments.
